Aug 25, ’17: Same-Sex Relationships in Islam – Talk by Hadi Hussain

hitlon-dresden

On 25 August, 2017, the O Collective hosted a talk by Hadi Hussain addressing the subject of same-sex relationships and their validity in Islam. It was a private event attended by queer people and allies.

The talk covered three main areas: the Qur’an, Sunnah and Hadith, and Fiqh (jurisprudence). Bringing together the arguments of leading scholars on the subject, Hadi discussed the ever-present topic of the people of Lut (as) and the Qur’an’s view on their punishment. He also discussed other parts of the Qur’an that speak to diversity, sexual transgression and God’s judgement.

The discussion moved on to the Sunnah and the Hadith of the Prophet (saws), which mentions various instances in which the Prophet (saws) encountered men who were effeminate or in some other way non-confirming of gender roles and expressions. He also shared a variety of punishments for sodomy that began in the time of the Rightly-Guided Califs (ra).

Finally, the discussion reached the topic of Islamic jurisprudence and under what circumstances, and by what logics, it has determined the punishment for sodomy.

The talk was followed by a lively question-and-answer session with and among the attendees.

O will be holding these private events off and on in the coming months. In the meantime, keep an eye out for a full detailed summary of the talk after Eid-ul-Azha.

Eid Mubarak, everyone!
