The term Hijra (ہیجڑا) is a South Asian word referring to an organized community of transgender women who normally earn their living by begging, celebrating weddings, mourning with families at funerals and, sometimes, sex work.ٰ In Pakistan, the terms zanana is also used, although zanana has other meanings as well. “Hijra” is sometimes used derrogatorily. When meeting a trans woman from this community, it’s best to ask her what term she prefers.
